This script is marked as running under
/bin/sh, but it seems
to use a feature found in bash but not in the SUSv3 or POSIX shell
Some examples are:
==in a test, it should use
readwithout a variable in the argument
functionto define a function
. command args, passing arguments to commands via
sourceis not supported
[[ test ]]instead of
[ test ](requires a Korn shell)

We use semantic versions.
The patch number is a commit step indicator relative to the
release tag in our Git
